Street Fighter 4 vs Mortal Kombat 4

Hello readers! It's been a while between drinks...so I hope you enjoy what I give to you in the coming weeks!

This weeks entries are Street Fighter 4 and Mortal Kombat 4, which begs the eternal question, which is the better fighting game franchise?

Street Fighter 4

Developed by Capcom and released in arcades 2008, SF4 is the latest incarnation to the famous fighting game series, with the lack of mainstream success that SF3 had garnered, the development team decided it was back to basics, bringing back almost every character that had featured in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo as well as putting in a few old favourites from the Alpha series as well as 5 completely new characters to the franchise, the aim of the game is to defeat the other opponent using attacks and stringing together combinations to ensure your chances of victory. Where SF4 truly excels in it's execution is thanks to the relative simplicity of the engine, attacks work similar to a game of scissors/paper/rock as there are aerial attacks, ground attacks and low attacks performed by simple commands.

Fei-Long, taking the fall for what so many fanboys would kill to see.

What Capcom added to increase a player's chances of victory SF4 is thanks to the focus attack, Super Combo and Ultra Combo system, what the Super Combo gauge does is increase when the player attacks and the player can use the gauge to improve their attacks. The Ultra Gauge, however, increases when the player is attacked or when the player successfully absorbs an attack using the Focus Guard, in which 1 hit can be nullified before the opponent can fight back. A testament to this game is the quote 'the simple things in life are often the best'.

p.s. Anyone who wants to play me on PS3 can find me on ChinoZaki, be warned, I play a mean Chun-Li and Vega ;D.

Mortal Kombat 4

For roughly a decade, Mortal Kombat has undergone a massive transformation. Mortal Kombat 4 was Midway's attempt at turning the series from a 2-D fighter into a 3-D fighter, with ambitious intent. The intent, however, is hilariously misplaced as the execution is hilariously flawed. The game tries so hard to be edgy and in your face by offering the only Fighting Game alternative which make Mortal Kombat famous in the first place, gore, the very element that made Mortal Kombat famous.

Seriously, if I have to point out the game's inferiority any further, I'll perform a fatality on someone myself! Ho ho ho.

The game offered a set of finishing moves for each character called 'Fatalities', since the series' conception the 'ities' have branched out into Brutalities, Animalities and Friendships, which doesn't help for players who want to take the game seriously as half the time it isn't even treating itself seriously. The cast is hilariously forgettable, the controls are incredibly unresponsive and fiddly as they tried to tack on optional weapon combat ala Soul Calibur & the presentation has aged terribly since it's release, the only positive I can say about MK4 is that at least Midway have better numeracy skills than Capcom. This game is irrefutable proof that Americans should not be let near fighting games, unless your name is Seth Killian.

The Winner:

Street Fighter 4

FATALITY, lol.
